The color red: It represents his capacity to see to see beyond. It also represents blood, death, love and passion; these were things the society did not have because they want it to be a perfect world. Light eyes: They symbolize difference because not a lot a of people have them and the few who do have the capacity to see beyond.
It shows how the society cannot get rid of nature completely. The river: It symbolizes escape because if you cross it you are out of the community. It also represents danger because the four year old boy Caleb drowned in the river.
The sled: It symbolizes freedom because in the first memory the sled ride is fun and enjoyable. The apple: It symbolizes life because he sees red the first time he sees an apple and he realizes that he is different.
